2010! This is going to be one of South Africa’s biggest years in history. 2010 will join years like 1994, which is the year that democracy dawned. South Africa has hosted other major events before. Among them the Rugby world cup a year after democracy and the Africa cup of nations two years after democracy, winning both events. The Springboks have since won another World Cup in France while Bafana Bafana, still talk about the 1996 win of the Africa Cup of nations. Cricket world cup has been hosted here too. Non-sporting events such as the world summit on sustainable development in 2002 was a resounding success just like the other events we have hosted.

Of course the soccer world cup is the biggest of them all. It is the world’s biggest sporting event and this year it will take place in South Africa. It comes every four years and has been around for many decades. But this will be the first time that it takes place on the African soil.

This massive animal called the soccer/football world cup is coming. It’s imminent! We have spoken so much about 2010. Now it is 2010. We spoke about 2010 as if the tournament was going to kick-off on the first of January and stay on until the last day of 2010 in December. 2010 is here, that means the count down has gained steam. The clock is ticking.
